Andrea O'Donnell

Andrea O’Donnell was an activist, a leader, a hero, and a dear friend to many at San Diego State University and the community. Andrea graduated from Chichester High School in 1985. She left her home in Pennsylvania to attend community college in the San Francisco Bay Area, and then attended San Diego State University to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Women’s Studies.

As a volunteer of the Women’s Resource Center at SDSU, Andrea was active, energetic, and dedicated to improving women’s lives. She soon became director of the WRC, organizing events such as student scholarship workshops, a women’s health fair and workshops that taught women how to be strong. One of her proudest achievements was bringing Patricia Ireland, then president of the National Organization for Women to speak at SDSU. In addition to teaching self- defense courses, she tirelessly worked to provide aid to victims of violence and abuse, and bravely fought against the distribution of sexist materials at Aztec Shops.

On November 5, 1994, Andrea O’Donnell was strangled to death by her ex-boyfriend, in her La Mesa Condominium. He was convicted of first-degree murder in August 1995 after admitting to killing Andrea while high on rock cocaine. The shock and sadness of Andrea’s death was widespread.

For many people, the news shattered misconceptions about domestic violence, and who its victims are.

The death of Andrea was a painful reminder that domestic violence claims all kinds of women, even those who are as bold and strong as Andrea O’Donnell.

Andrea is remembered by friends and loved ones for her kindness, warmth, glowing energy, and dedication to activism. She cared deeply about the Earth, educating high school and college women about abusive relationships, and helping women in crisis.

Andrea is dearly missed. She leaves a legacy of strength, caring and feminist activism. Her memory continues to be a constant source of strength and inspiration to the members of the San Diego State University Andrea O’Donnell Women’s Resource Center.
